Master of Theological Studies (MTS)
The MTS program strengthens the religious basis of your life and work, whether in a secular career or church-related career, by providing you with a general theological understanding as well as the opportunity for in-depth study and specialization. The degree is awarded conjointly with the University of Toronto.
Goals
To deepen knowledge of the Catholic theological tradition with the possibility of attaining a focused knowledge in a specific discipline.
To enable students to think theologically by considering different theological areas, perspectives and methods.
To allow a level of freedom that respects and builds upon a person’s interests, abilities, and past experiences and encourages that individual’s commitment to life-long learning.
Curriculum
The units of study include foundational and in-depth courses, electives and a summative exercise.
Summative exercises (Field Education, Thesis or Research Paper options)
Students may complete the degree in one of three ways: a Field Education option, a Thesis option, or a Research Paper option.
Master of Theological Studies (MTS) Theology, Spirituality and the Arts Stream
The Master of Theological Studies Theology, Spirituality, and the Arts stream provides you with the knowledge and skills to analyze and interpret the theological dimension of arts and culture.
Twenty credits are required to complete the MTS program. It can be done in two years or completed on a part-time basis. A CPGA of 2.7 is required to graduate. All courses for full-time and part-time students, including any variation from the norm, require the approval of each participating college’s Basic Degree Director and an advisor for the Theology, Spirituality, and the Arts stream.
This stream in the MTS program:
- Allows students to receive focused academic content in the area of theology, spirituality and the arts within the existing learning objectives and structure of the MTS.
- Explores the range of ways that the arts intersect with theological understanding.
- Supports student exploration of the possible role of theology in arts related vocations.
- Uses interdisciplinary methodologies from theology, aesthetics theory, art history, pastoral theology, liturgy and material culture studies, and other related disciplines.
- Prepares students for preparation for an advanced research degree.
When applying for the MTS, you need to declare your intent to pursue the Theology, Spirituality and the Arts stream.
Specific information about the program should be sought from the TST member college offering the program, as each college sets its own unique curriculum for the program.
