Getting a study permit

Every international student who plans to study in Canada for more than six months needs a study permit to study in Canada. You should apply as early as possible as there are sometimes delays. Check with the Canadian consulate/embassy closest to you as requirements may change and can differ from country to country. Preparing to study in Canada.

Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

All students are now required to have a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) [https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/get-documents/provincial-attestation-letter.html]

The following steps will need to be taken:

Accept your offer of admission
Pay the admission deposit.

Once you have accepted the offer of admission and paid the admission deposit, RSM will request a PAL on your behalf. Once it is received by RSM, you will receive an email notification when your PAL is available. It can take up to 7-10 business days from making your admission deposit payment to receiving notification of your PAL. The RSM Registrar’s office will send it to the email address provided in your application

The admissions deposit payment will be applied to your student account as a payment toward your tuition fees. Admission deposits are non-refundable.

The Government of Canada requires a number of documents to apply for a study permit:

Proof of acceptance
Provincial attestation letter or territorial attestation letter
Proof of identity
Proof of financial support increase starting on September 1, 2025

You may also need:

A letter of explanation
A medical exam
A custodian declaration (minors only), or
Other documents

Beware of scams

Many students have reported different types of fraud and scams. Many scams target people through emails or messages. These attempts are on the rise and becoming more sophisticated and polished. Fraud and scam attacks are designed to confuse you and to prey on your fears, curiosity, or excitement. They often create a sense of urgency which makes you respond to the fraudster and expose yourself to risks. Learn more about the many different kinds of scams.

English language competency

When applying, you should be fluent enough in English to participate actively in seminars and write essays and examinations. You may be required to pass the TOEFL (Test of English as a Second Language) and the TWE (Test of Written English). You should submit English facility test scores when you apply. Test scores within two years are acceptable.
